I. Scope
Initiated and directed by iriv, it gathered 14 partners in 7 countries (France, Austria, Germany, Italy, Hungary, Poland and the United Kingdom). The project was supported by the European Commission, in the framework of the Lifelong Learning (LLL) programme and the Regional Council in Champagne Ardenne.
II. Object
Associations may be the ideal place to get accustomed and trained to novel and innovative solutions and practices, to experiment or acquire new skills. For volunteers, a voluntary experience may lead or facilitate a professional career. Identifying and evaluating the skills and qualifications acquired through volunteering in the associations should be the way to recognize and validate this informal learning. It should be very useful for people who have no professional experience to face with a first activity (youngsters) and for people who have been kept away from the labour market to renew with a professional activity (parents who have raised their children, sick people when they have recovered, prisoners when they are free...). A voluntary experience is an alternative way to experiment, develop or renew with specific skills and qualifications in a specific context, nor public nor private, with both professional and non professional staff, with the goal to include and serve the general interest.
III. Objectives
The aim of the AVE project is to elaborate a tool and a method :
- to identify and evaluate the skills and qualifications required and acquired in volunteering ;
- to validate these skills and qualifications in a professional perspective
IV. Public
The project AVE is adressing :
- youngsters without any professional experience ;
- parents who stopped working to raise their children ;
- people kept away from the labour market (long term unemployed people).
V. Results
The expected results are of 4 kinds:
- a first report; state of art, presents the key data concerning volunteering, and the assessment of voluntary experience (AVE).
- a second report analyzes the results of the consultation made in spring 2004, about the needs for AVE expressed by national associations. A questionnaire was the base of the consultation. It can be downloaded in the seven languages of the partner's countries. It is a tool for association to analyze their strategy about training, assessment of competences and monitoring of volunteers.
- a portfolio and a guide for trainers. This tool and this method allow the assessment and the valorization of competences gained during a voluntary experience. They have been experimented among associations and professionals in human resource.
- a network of experts on a national and European level, whose contacts are available on our website. The network is a place to exchange experiences and practices, and it is also accessible for the expert in trainings.
